View Full Version : What do you use your computer for?

You know, message boards were not even on the list of reasons we used to rationalize the purchase of our first computer. How about you?
Now, I think that about 90% of the time we are both on the computer is spent in message boards. Occasionally we Google something and occasionally I do some writing or photo work, but mostly it is our entertainment and social centre. I suspect that most people that are on home PC's are doing the same thing we are. Who could have forseen that?

At the moment it seems to be mostly for message boards but normally I use it for MOO programming/playing, simulation work and tech trouble shooting.

"Other" means porn, right? ;)
Well seeing as I work in IT I use my computer for work primarily. This place of course and amazon.co.uk :)

oka ywe need multiple catergory selction here ( another mod to make *LOL*)
i use my PC primarily for work, video editing photo stuff web design and programming, my eldest uses it for playing city of heros, and it is also a good place to watch TV in the kitchen *LOL*
i play the odd game but that lasts all of 5 minutes....
most of my time these days is split between video and 3D rendering, with me doing more design on the laptop rather then the desktop... ( the couch is so much more comfortable *L*)
and when i am waiting for something to render ( either video or 3D) i am surfing the net, which is why i need a decent multitasking machine Ht or 2 processors) otherwise i would be very bored in times of rendering ( these thigns can take hours even days!)
though i think you are right alot of people buy machines now with the sole idea of being online, a few use word processing too....
i think, even though there are some excellent games, the PC has become much less of a favourable gaming machine, thoughmore powerfull then any console (with the right hardware) people do not like sitting at a pc they would rather be in front of the TV.... in the old days when consoles were about as powerful as a desktop calculator things were some what different, and even today, you get hardcore gamers on PC, but with a top notch graphics card costing more then an XBOX and the need fore additional hardware which totlas more then the top 3 consoles put together, the console market i think is more firmly a new thing and people use the pc for communication
(unless you are at work and having LAN parties of unreal or quake of course, NO console can beat a good LAN party *L*)

I chose "other" because I do a variety of things. I do post on boards, but I also do a lot of reading/research. Sometimes I post interesting articles, but a lot of what I read doesn't fit the theme of boards I post on.
I play games sometimes and listen to music. I write things that I dream of having published, but probably never will. I don't mind. I just like seeing my words in print. :lol
Oh... and it makes a nice desk ornament on the days I don't use the computer at all.

I use my computer for message boards mostly. I would use it for writing but I hate the word program the computer came with. And my e-mail doesn't work so it's mostly message boards and the occasional research.

I found another use for my computer! Three weeks ago I created a blog detailing my experiences in doing home repairs and renovations. Now I feel kinda responsible for it; I feel obligated to write about everything I'm doing and learning in that line. I enjoy writing and this obligation that I feel toward posting on my blog, forces me to write regularly.

I enjoy your blog, Geezer, but my loving spouse is afraid it's giving me ideas. :D

I have to say writing, because that's what I'm normally doing when I browse this forum and the other two I use.

Not to worry Jane! Anything I've talked about in home repairs or renovating can be accomplished by the fairer sex too! In fact, it's my opinion that the ladies may posses better fine motor skills and more patience than the guys and those are definite advantages! My secret is to simply do the job over and over until I finally get it right; the trick seems to be to know when it's right and then leave it alone!
Did you read the latest post on laminate flooring? That turned out so much better than I expected.
