Tinfoil-hat tells me there will be a 'great save' if it looks like Bush will win, and a 'catastrophic attack' that will necessitate postponing the election for a spell under martial law, if it looks like Bush is losing.

Personally, I'm inclined to think that even the Bushies wouldn't go as far as declaring martial law... but I also thought they wouldn't go into Iraq with the rest of the world so vastly opposed.

Report: US 'considering' postponed elections

US officials are considering ways to postpone the 2 November presidential poll if "terrorists" were to attack the United States near election time, Newsweek is reporting.


Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge on Friday warned that "al-Qaida is moving forward with its plans to carry out a large-scale attack in the United States in an effort to disrupt our democratic process," although he admitted US intelligence had no information about any specific plot.

But unnamed counterterrorism officials told Newsweek on Sunday they were considering a proposal to delay balloting in the event of an attack.

The head of the new US Election Assistance Commission, De Forest Soaries Junior, wrote to Ridge urging him to ask Congress for emergency legislation that would allow his agency to reschedule the election if terrorists were to strike.

"The federal government has no agency that has the statutory authority to cancel and reschedule a federal election," Soaries wrote, according to the US weekly magazine.

Soaries, a Republican and former Secretary of State of New Jersey said that all the possibilities should be looked at.

He said he was hopeful that there are "some proposals already being floated. If there are, we're not aware of them. If there are not, we will probably try to put one on the table."

He also alluded to a difficult situation, whether the federal government postpones the elections or not, it would have tremendous political ramifications in any case.

"Who makes the call, under what circumstances is the call made, what are the constitutional implications?" he said.

"I think we have to err on the side of transparency to protect the voting rights of the country."

Ridge's office has asked the Justice Department to review the letter and other proposals to determine how the election could legally be postponed, the magazine said.

The US Constitution sets election day for the first Tuesday of November.

"We are reviewing the issue to determine what steps need to be taken to secure the election," department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse told the magazine.

A quick monitor of web log forums and discussion boards on the Internet reveals that many alternative websites have been discussing for some time the prospect that the Bush administration may postpone elections in a security event.

Some websites are referring to what has become known as the 'October surprise', an event where either a "terrorist attack" hits the American mainland, or, as some politicians like former US Secretary of State Madeline Albright have speculated, a captured Usama bin Ladin is finally paraded on television.

In either case, talk of consideration being given to the possibility of postponing the elections is likely to fuel conspiracy theories.

Al Qaeda may well attack here before the election. Distinct, realistic possibility. It depends on the election outcome Al Qaeda would want, and how they think they can best achieve that outcome.

If they want Bush for four more years, I don't believe they will attack.

If they don't want Bush for four more years, I suspect they will do something, as that would prove that Bush has NOT done anything to make us safer.

I DO believe that the Bush folks will stage and event that they'll successfully prevent. We'll have news reports, complete with lie film coverage, of rented trucks full of explosives being stopped before entering the Lincoln Tunnel and other places.

This will make Bush a hero and people will vote for him. Later we'll find it was all staged, but he'll be in the White House.
