AP Poll: Bush Gains Slight Lead Over Kerry

Friday, July 9, 2004
WASHINGTON - President Bush has opened a slight lead over John Kerry while regaining the confidence of some voters on the economy and other domestic issues, according to an Associated Press poll with a silver lining for Democrats.

The addition of Sen. John Edwards to Kerry's ticket appears to have helped the Democrat in the South and among low-income voters — a result the Massachusetts senator had hoped for when he selected the North Carolina populist over more seasoned politicians.
Story Continues Below

"I'm more impressed with Kerry now that he chose Edwards," said Republican voter Robin Smith, 45, a teacher from Summerville, S.C. "I look at Kerry and I don't trust him, but he's got Edwards, who's more middle-of-the-road, a strong speaker, more able to reach the common man."

The AP-Ipsos poll found Bush slightly leading Kerry 49 percent to 45 percent with independent candidate Ralph Nader at 3 percent. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. A month ago, the Bush-Kerry matchup was tied and Nader had 6 percent.

The three-day survey began Monday, the day before Kerry tapped Edwards as his running mate, and asked registered voters about the newly minted ticket on Tuesday and Wednesday. Half supported the Republican tandem of Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney while 46 percent backed the Kerry-Edwards ticket, just within that question's margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.

Voters said they were feeling better about the economy and no worse about Iraq, a sign that Bush may be regaining his political footing just as Democrats make a high-profile push toward their nominating convention in late July.

"I want Bush in there, because the other guy is like sending a boy to do a man's job," said Glenn Foldessy, 45, of Streetsboro, Ohio, outside Cleveland. Foldessy, who usually votes Republican, said Edwards made the Democratic ticket stronger, but not strong enough.

"We have somebody now who's established and has things on track and if we destabilize this government during the war on terror, that's playing right into the hands of the terrorists," he said.

Bush vs. Kerry Today

Saturday July 10, 2004--Senator Kerry now leads President Bush in the Rasmussen Reports Presidential Tracking Poll, 49% to 45%. Today's results reflect a five-point net gain for the Democrats since John Edwards was named as Kerry's running mate. In our last survey before the announcement, President Bush had a one-point edge, 47% to 46%.

Today is the first time since Kerry wrapped up the nomination that either candidate topped the 48% mark in our daily Tracking Poll. Prior to today, both candidates had stayed within three points of the 45% mark on every single night of polling for more than 120 days.

From one of the more RESPECTED polling groups....

The AP poll is the ONLY poll that shows Bush over Kerry, and shows no Edwards bounce:

So of course, Fox News reports this poll. Along with drooling morons on political boards across the nation.

To continue the poll from Rasmussen....

Today is the first time since Kerry wrapped up the nomination that either candidate topped the 48% mark in our daily Tracking Poll. Prior to today, both candidates had stayed within three points of the 45% mark on every single night of polling for more than 120 days.

Yesterday, we released data showing Kerry leading by 5 points in Pennsylvania while Bush leads by four in Ohio. Our latest Electoral College projections show Kerry leading Bush 247-203. Later today, at 3:00 p.m. Eastern, we will release our latest results for Michigan and Virginia.

The Kerry-Edwards ticket is enjoying a modest bounce in today's polling release. However, it is not as big as some had anticipated. As a practical matter, there are not likely to be big bounces this year--even following the conventions. Four factors combine to reduce the potential for frivolous bounces in the polls.

First, more money has already been spent on advertising before the conventions than ever before. Second, the country is polarized in their opinions about George W. Bush. Third, the convention television coverage and audience will be smaller than ever. Fourth, the reality of what happens with Iraq and the U.S. economy dwarfs any campaign tactics in terms of electoral impact.

Earlier in the week, we released polling data for Missouri, Iowa, and Maine. All three states are too close to call. We also showed Senator Kerry leading President Bush in Florida by a margin of 48% to 43%. Our North Carolina polling data showed Bush with a seven-point lead in Edwards' home state. We also released new data for New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Texas.

Democrats are now much more optimistic about their prospects of winning in November. In fact, among all voters, 46% believe the Bush-Cheney team will be re-elected while 44% believe Kerry and Edwards will emerge victorious. Those figures represent a dramatic improvement for the Democrats compared to a month ago.

While Republicans are presenting Kerry and Edwards as the most liberal ticket ever, a majority of Americans say that John Edwards is a political moderate. Edwards is also viewed more favorably than the man he hopes to replace, Dick Cheney.

Oh for fuck's sake stop your whining Bobboi. He didn't call the poster names and his point is well made. Silver is not here to discuss anything with the rest of us. He's here to post propaganda.

Thing is, he doesn't hang around for long enough to realise that it's counterproductive and annoying.

OK I'd like to invoke kramsret's rule:

Calling someone an "annoying little shitbag" isn't a "personal attack" if, in fact, the person you're calling an "annoying little shitbag" is, in fact, an annoying little shitbag.

When they're that annoying, kram, it doesn't need to be pointed out... :D

I couldn't fault anybody for posting 'apply Kramsret's Rule here' rather than 'you annoying little shitbag'... As a mod, I'd have to edit the latter.

Kerry Gets 5-Point Lift in Newsweek Poll After Picking Edwards
July 10 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry may have gained in his race against President George W. Bush by picking North Carolina Senator John Edwards as his running mate, a poll for Newsweek magazine found.

The July 8-9 poll of 1,001 registered voters found the Kerry- Edwards ticket leading Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney by 51 percent to 45 percent. In a May 13-14 poll, Kerry had an edge of 46 percent to Bush's 45 percent. The new poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Kerry's lead gets smaller in a three-way race with independent candidate Ralph Nader. In that case, the Democratic ticket got 47 percent support, compared with Bush's 44 percent and Nader's 3 percent. Kerry, 60, a four-term Massachusetts senator, announced his choice of Edwards, 51, on Tuesday.
