Should the presidential debates be changed?

Are the presidential debates just a joint venture by the democrats and republicans to showcase their candidates by giving them a non-threatening forum with softball questions and no third parties to shake up the status quo? I think so, but others say that we have to keep third-party candidates out, and leave the debates in the hands of the two parties to keep things focused.
