OK, here is the scenario; a new, Earth-like planet has been discovered only 8 light years away. You have been one of the very few settlers selected from millions of applicants, to move there. All of the basic stuff you will need to get started and stay healthy will be provided, but you can take only a limited amount of underwear and toiletries and three personal items that weigh no more than 35 pounds total. What three items will you take?

Oh, umm, don't worry about being in your underwear, I've heard they plan to supply us with unisex jumpsuits, and I hope, in a variety of colors. Actually, I want some gung-ho patches to put on mine. We aren't a part of the crew, therefore not obliged to observe strict military discipline, so we can pretty much decorate ourselves as we wish. After all, we are just a bunch of neo-farmers!

1) a violin -- 6lbs w/case
2) Toolbox - 25lbs
3) 2-kittens - 4lbs

Cwinton, I agree with you on the kitties, a basic necessity, but not to worry, I have it on good authority that the ship's cat is very pregnant and we will soon be blessed with all the kittens we can handle!. Also understand that dogs will be with us as frozen embroys as another basic necessity as will a number of other domestic animals that we will need.

The violin, great! We have a musician! Are you sure it and the case weigh that much? Sounds a little heavy but then I have never weighed something like that.

BTW, what is your specialty? We do need someone to grow coffee, cocoa for chocolate, sugarcane for rum production, and I suppose the smokers will want tobacco. Myself, I hope to run the distillery and maybe the brewry, there always seems to be a big demand for that sort of thing. Then there is the gambling concession, but that's not my cup of tea, and speaking of tea.....

This is a particularly cat-friendly planet which will, within 30 years, be utterly overrun with the blessed things. Its native creatures have no natural predators, so they will stand and watch as they are eaten to extinction.

id like to take...
1. cds to cater for a broad range of tastes, we could patch this thru on the spaceship com so as to save on the player and speakers.
2.Adrenaline(Epinepherine) and antihistamine injections for those allergic to all the cats and the lyca all-in-ones... :) :) :)

OK! This is good! We have a bunch of Neo-Farmers that are cat-friendly musicians heading out to God-knows-where to colonize a planet. Yes, you are right, cat over-population could definitely be a problem, so one of us had better learn how to neuter cats in our spare time. Wasn't that something they taught us in Ag class? Maybe not, maybe it was roosters, I forget.

I think we ought to start organizing our talents and deciding who will grow what. We will be setting down in the tropics with mountains inland. We definitely need someone in charge of coffee and tea production, and um, cacao beans because I understand that some consider these essentials. Personally, I want the hops, malt, barley and rye business. I like to make a little brew and spirits now and again. Later, I plan to build a river boat and introduce gambling.

Any smokers in the group?

You shoud take an absolutely humongeous library, on electronic media. Can I be librarian? That would suit me better than farming, I think....

Actually, Don,
I think you have to take pen and paper, and real books.
At least you'll be able to read it like the Doomsday book in 1000 yrs and not have a pile of discarded electronic stuff that no-one can access as there are no machines available.

Think I'll take some mung beans and sweat peas.

It's good to read real Shackleton stuff, not tv versions,
for advice and experience as to personal items to take on long journeys.
He allowed the banjo to go on the boat to Elephant Island, for mental reeasons.

"He allowed the banjo to go on the boat to Elephant Island, for mental reeasons."

You mean he was "crazy" about the banjo?

I think he called it "mental medicine".

Im not much good at growing stuff.
Ill be the healer and set up a hospital/centre.
The payment will be like an insurance only paid in food, for myself and the staff. However, unless someone can invent transportation that runs on an abundant natural resource, then emergency vehicles are out of the question, youll have to get yourselves there. :eyes

Anyway, the question asked about personal items, 35 lb. limit:

30# gross for my grandfathers wooden toolbox, and a selection of tools, my father's and mine.

5 lbs for my other grandfather's bible (because it was his, and because of what's written in it and inserted into it), and for my mother's book manuscript.

Find 4 oz. somewhere for small harmoinica.

I would bring

7.5 lb collection of books on herbs, oils aromatherapy and botanical recipes, folk medicine yoga and spiritual philosophies (I'd probably take unbound printouts to conserve weight) or Just my Book of Shadows, which has a degree of all those things already in it.

20 lb artist box ( all the basics for painting, writing, sketching, all necessary related items I could fit into one box within the weight limit)

7.5 lb. botanical box ( full of herbs and essential essential oils for the trip)

My service would be the candle/soapmaker (alshemist) and healer
I would be the one to make shampoos and skin care from natiural resources, and combine botanicals/aromatherapy and body work (masage, stretching etc... ) to help people stay healthy on the new world.

I don't grow things, so don't ask me... but I work wonderfully with things that are already grown and cultivated

I'd borrow musical instruments and CD's from those who have brought them in trade for something I have or do that they need or want

Oh!!!!! This is Good!!!!! Lets see now, Cheezie is going to cultivate the strongest "hemp" in the galaxy (for ropemaking , no doubt!) and Xenchantresse knows what to do with it: I don't grow things, so don't ask me... but I work wonderfully with things that are already grown and cultivated

Ms Digabit is stewing about non-polluting transportation but I can assure you that we have several breeds of frozen horse embryos aboard and they actually are non-polluting unless you count horse apples which I don't, because I view it as a valuable plant additive good for growing roses and tomatoes.

I'm glad to hear that donquioxte will bring along a harmonica as I'm particularly fond of good blues tunes in the smoky little country pub that I'm planning. Cheezie is in charge of tobacco production too and someone mentioned they were a great cook....sounds good! I doubt that we are going to have much time for actual work, looks like our days are going to be pretty well filled with hedonistic pleasures! I'm hoping we will have some good fishing too!
