My allergies are kickin my butt. I shot my CETME and my Savage 112 in .223 today. The scope on my savage keeps turning in the rings. Just when I get it sighted in I have to loosen the rings and straighten it back up. I guess I need to buy some new rings. Maybe a drop of locktite would work.

See if you can get your hands on a dab of thge "680" green stuff, or any one of the varieties that says it's for "cylindrical positioning", or some such thing. NOT the bolt or threadlocker varieties (usually blue or red). Clean the surfaces with alcohol, rings and scope, then put a drop in the center of the upper and lower half of each ring. Carefully set the scope in the lowers, getting it as square as you can, then carefully lower the upper half into position, align for horizontal crosshairs, and tighten the screws/bolts. I've always had better luck with the tiny allen-head type bolts, rather than slotted screws. They're what I'm used to dealing with at work, and I can get more torque on them with an allen wrench, without the possibility of slipping, than I can with a slotted-head screw. Let me know how it works out. If this does not cure the problem, there are a couple of other tricks to try, so don't give up. Of course, new rings are always a last resort. You might also want to measure the scope body at the ring points, with a micrometer or good pair of calipers, if you can lay hands on them. I have seen scope bodies just a shade enough undersize to make tightening up a pair of rings, and having them hold, be a problem.
Let me know what happens.

I appreciate the info. Where can I get the 680 Green stuff? Auto parts store? I'm still at home and have been taking some time off to get used to some new allergy medicine. The peach trees, Bradford pear trees, redbuds, and darn near everything else is blooming and I was having trouble breathing but my doctor perscribed some different medicine and it seem to be working a little better. Hope everythings ok in the GFN. 38-55

Yup, I would try the auto parts store first, then try any "industrial supply" places, listing under that heading in the yellow pages. Your proximity to Warner-Robbins leads me to believe there might be enough machine work in the area to support one or more places like that. Just get the little bottle (you'll see why when you ask the price), as it will do countless scopes at a drop of it here and there. Should be $7 - $10, depending on how friendly and honest they are. But be sure and check the scope diameter where it sits in the rings, as I have seen some just a hair enough undersize to make tightening the rings on them a losing proposition.
I'd be interested to know what you think of your Norinco, after you get it and shoot it. Curious as to how you might rate it for fit, function and quality.
And the GFN is actually beginning to thaw out. Hooray!!!!

Here, can we have a gunslingers' song thread?
I'll start it off with
Devil's Right Hand, Steve Earle.
My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow and soon I found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out
So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
Actually the whole message of that song is that the pistol can
"get you into trouble, but it can't get you out."

I got my pistol tuesday. I't's a Norinco Mod. 213. ( aka Tokarev) It was used and came with one mag. No box, instructions, no spare mags. It's in good condition with about 65% bluing and no pitting or rust. The grips are black plastic. The grip itself is narrow but feels good. The gun seems to be well made and is of better quality than I expected. All steel except for the grips.
The safety is a lever on the left side at the rear of the pistol. It rotates to the rear in about a 45 degree arc. It was not easy to use right handed and it takes both hands for us lefties. It's a single action and meant to be carried " cocked and locked." I'm not a fan of C&L carry and prefer a Glock for duty and carry use. But for a rightie that likes "cocked and locked" it would work ok. I didn't buy it for carry use but for fun and the occasional snake or stray critter that's after my chickens. It's just fine for that.
I fired about 90 rounds through it. I had 2 failures to extract but that is probably due to needing cleaning. I don't know how to field strip it yet to give it a good scrubbing. It shot high and to the right but a few hard taps with a hammer corrected the shooting to far to the right. I put the top of the front sight to the bottom of the u-notch on the rear sight and that alleviated the shooting to high. Accuracy was surprisingly good and the gun is lot of fun to shoot. I like it a lot and feel I got my $119.00 plus tax worth.
I also bought some Silver Bear 9mm 145 grain hollowpoints. I shot 4 of them across my Chronograph and they averaged 1073 FPS. Not magnum performance but they would work ok for carry use. I prefer 115 to 125 grain+P's for duty or carry use in 9mm handguns. The 145 grainers will work just fine for snakes or chicken murdering critters. $5.95 a box plus shipping, from AIM, isn't bad on a persons pocketbook either. Hope I didn't bore ya'll with all this. snpr47

And how about this one, Roseval - "That's the Night That the Lights Went Out in Georgia". I'm getting two birds with one stone on that one, huh?
"And that's one body that'll never be found.....See, little sister don't miss when she aims her gun."
I left out the part about the big-bellied sheriff. :lol
Remind me to someday tell you about an incident a friend of mine and I witnessed, in Smyrna, just outside Atlanta, one afternoon, on our way to Florida, back in '72, when we took the circle route around Atlanta to get away from road construction. Kind of funny, actually. But I bet not for the kid it happened to.

No, country songs are all usually variations on a limited set of themes. He just lost her, her just found her, he's still looking for her, or his dog just died.
Real MUSIC with a country flavor is called Bluegrass, and is what all REAL men listen to - not that sob-sister, whiney, nasal affront to the senses, that bunkhouse drivel penned by lonely cowboys on dark and rainy nights.

I will never, ever take a Tokarev apart again! Not even if it gets too dirty to shoot. It came apart easily enough but the hammer spring slipped from under trigger arm and it took me 3 days to figure it out and get it back together. Now the magazine doesn't want to go in. So I just removed the magazine spacer and left it out. I won't even go into how the re-blue job went. My fault. I can do a lot better.

toolman846
05-05-2004, 09:59 PM
Long ones, huh? OK. Say - what bullet are you using in your 9mm? I load lubed lead for general burnz-up, and semi-jacketed hollow points for serious work. Around 124 grains. And hot. The pieces I've got will stand it. Got a couple of 9mm Lahtis that I've had for almost thirty years now - got them when they were going for $150 apiece. A very stout weapon, and will handle some really hot stuff. I've going to get a spare slide, and put a Luger artillery model-length barrel on it, just to see how it shoots. The things are cut for a Luger-style shoulder stock, but I don't have one, and can't make one, as it would be against the law, as far as I know, and I'm not willing to take the chance over something like that. So I'll probably just use them off-hand, and off a rather substantial pistol rest I built. The rest weighs about 30 pounds, and all adjustments are done with 3/8-16 socket head bolts, and allen wrenches. No twitch, no wiggle. Where you aims, it shoots!

I use 115gr Russian made hardball for practice and 115 +p's made by Georgia Arms which comes loaded with a Speer GoldDot HP. I have 2 boxes of Brown Bear 145 HP for protecting my chickens from stray dogs, etc. but I don't think I'd use it for a duty/carry round.
I use Georgia Arms .40S&W 155grGDHP+p's (yes they make +p's for .40 S&W) which is loaded to close to 1200fps. Georgia Arms also sells a +p+ in both 9mm and .40. The .40cal +p+ is advertised at 1300fps but I'm afraid of it. The +p's cause the slide to come back so hard it ejects the empties into the stratosphere( ok so it's only about 20 feet into the air and about 30 feet away, it's still too far) so I'm not about to shoot the +p+'s. I shoot swaged lead bullets in my .38 and .357mag handloads and my own cast lead 203 gr rnfp's in my .44mag, but only load them to 1100fps to keep from leading the BBL. I usually cast from wheel weights so the lead is not very hard. I haven't handloaded any ammo in over a year or so but I still have some handloads left.

just recovering from finishing a crappy educational ICT data handling project thing.
I am really going back to my original opinion that money on PCs and internet use in schools, by pupils, is wasted, certainly at the primary level.
It's good for teachers to be able to use it in work preparation, which I have always done, but expecting teachers to manage a whole system, printers, scanners, laptops and networks is crazy. I am supposed to let my pupils, age 9-10, use the internet daily, but how can I ensure everyweb page they look at is vetted?
There is a filter but......
Rant over.
Looking forward to end of school year now.
I want to know how it's going with the legal prof?
Or is that all sorted out?

Go ahead and rant, teachers need to let off some steam occasionally.
I am supposed to let my pupils, age 9-10, use the internet daily, but how can I ensure everyweb page they look at is vetted?
Doesn't your school have a network tech? There are countless good quality filter solutions which can be implemented on proxy servers. Not only do they filter out less desirable sites, they can log all net access. Which in turn saves you having to check each PC individually, you can therefore monitor all access from the comfort of your desk in realtime.

Daav, actually, no we don't have a IT Tech.
A teacher has to do all the admin stuf, but I generally know more about it than she does.
There is a filter, and I think sites are logged.
I never log into any board in school,
but sometimes after school,
I look at Lifeboat, sex talk and all, which gets thru' the filter.
Your site doesn't.

There are about 150,000 in Lansing and surrounding area, and the local swap rag, the "Wheeler Dealer", always had two or three columns of guns in it. Bought a number of guns through the Wheeler Dealer, and at local shows there, which were always worth gioing to. I moved to GR, which is close to 400,000 for the overall area, and the Wheeler Dealer here usually has about four guns - period. And the shows have a lot of stuff, but it's all very high-priced, not much on dealing, and usually leave you with the feeling of "why did I go?" after you leave. How are they down your way?

The company my wife works for sent her there for a 2 day class.

For the most part I can do better searching the pawn shops or for ammo I go on the internet. The only time I find a great deal at a gunshow is when I'm broke! I let my C & R expire but used to get decent deals shopping the internet for guns. Do you have a C & R ffl?

See,
Snpr, I've been missing all the "truck driving into tree" stories.
Over here it's the bonfire season, bit difficult to explain.

I have another story for you.
I go to school 2 nights a week to learn outdoor products and small engine repair. One of the students was working on a
Snapper riding mower that was about 25 years old. The motor is in the rear and has a pull cord type starter. You have to go to the rear of the mower and pull the starter rope and then get on the mower. Just as he was about to pull the cord I thought "I hope he doesn't have it in gear" and looked down at the gear shift. It was in sixth gear and he pulled the starter rope before I could warn him. It cranked on the first pull and took off across the parking lot. :eek The throttle was wide open. We took off after the lawn mower. I weigh 300 lbs and the other student is 62 years old. Neither one of us is in shape for chasing a runaway lawn mower. I managed to jump on, splitting my pants in the process, and get the darn thing stopped before it hit any cars. We were embarrassed to no end. Our instructor said that I move pretty fast for a big guy.

I am very proud of the fact that I can start our mower. Husband gets the petrol and mixes it, puts it in, but I make it work.
Last time my eldest bro was at our old family home more than 20 yrs ago, (our father had been dead ten years) he got out all the assembled collection of historic mowers, cleaned them up and mowed the grass.
I reminded him that he never did it without a fight in the olden-daze, and he said he did it as a tribute to the "old man".
Later on he ran a vacumn repair shop, presumably 'cos he stripped down the hoovers as well.

It's good to come here and get away from all the Iraq/war/politics posts. It's gets tiresome reading the same stuff in differing disguises. Where's Jim?

Hmm, I'll try to think of a story.
Oh, I know, something I found out today, the school I have worked in, for most of last ten years, (one year out) had more than 800 chn in 1969, one of the largest in NI.
It now has less than 100.

population shift,
along sectarian lines.
Also, the pop. of inner city Belfast has dropped, with the birth rate,
but it is mostly sectarian re-alignment.

Here's a joke I got from Facts and fun:
An attorney returned home late one evening after a very taxing day trying to get a stay of execution for a client, named Wilbur Wright, who was due to be hanged for murder at midnight. His last minute plea for clemency to the state governor had failed and he was feeling tired and depressed. As soon as he got through the door his wife started on about, "What time of night do you call this? Where the heck have you been?" Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he went and poured himself a very large whisky and headed off to the bathroom for a long hot soak - pursued by his wife's sarcastic remarks.
While he was in the bath the phone rang, which the wife answered - to be told that her husband's client had been granted his stay of execution after all. Realizing what a day he must have had, she relented a little and went upstairs to give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door she was greeted by the sight of her husband's rear view as he bent naked over the bath cleaning the tub. "They're not hanging Wright tonight," she said, at which the attorney whirled round and screamed hysterically, "For crying out loud woman, don't you ever stop?"
